Feeding the People Provides Over 1,300 Meals

Since September 2011 Feeding the People has provided over 1,300 diabetic-appropriate meals to people living with diabetes.

Generous donations from individuals; grants from foundations and corporations such as The Abell Foundation, Novo Nordisk, and BD Diagnostics; and our partnership with Moveable Feast have allowed us to provide meals for $1.00 a meal.

Clients can order up to 21 meals a week and may pay using their Independence Cards.

Thank you to everyone who is supporting our work to provide meals, education, and support for people living with diabetes.

The Abell Foundation Awards Feeding the People Grant of $5,000

We would like to thank The Abell Foundation for awarding Feeding the People a generous grant of $5,000 to provide low-income diabetics with meals, education, and support. This grant will allow us to serve all of our current clients through July 2012.

Cynthia Vice & Lanh Mos offer Therapeutic Massage at Yin-Yang Ball

Somewhere between the hay rides, comic cooking, aerial theater, live music, dancing, silent auction, and delicious Mexican food at this year's Yin-Yang Ball, treat yourself to a revitalizing massage by Cynthia Vice or Lanh Mos. Cynthia and Lanh will be offering 10 minute chair massages for a $10 donation to Feeding the People.

Cynthia Vice, LMT is the owner of The Art of Healing studio in Parkton, Maryland. She is a Maryland State Licensed Massage Therapist and Energy worker (Reiki Master). Cynthia is nationally certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and is a professional member of the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals.

She serves as a member of the comprehensive treatment team at The Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine & Digestive Center, works with Sinai Hospital's Life Bridge Health and Fitness, and teaches kinesiology and massage in Towson.

As a massage therapist, Cynthia’s approach is gentle and compassionate as she works to create a sense of internal calm. Nurturing through touch creates an environment of trust in which physical and energetic blocks can be released to promote health and well-being.

Cynthia adjusts the depth of her work to the needs of the client and may incorporate gentle stretching, hot stones, breath and energy work, and visualization to broaden the effects of the session. Working with clients to address pain syndromes, she encourages clients to continue with self-care, awareness and discovery between sessions.

Nina Charity Supports Yin-Yang Ball

We would like to thank aerial dancer Nina Charity for letting us use her aerial equipment for Mara Neimanis' performance at the Yin-Yang Ball.

Check out Nina's dance company, Baltimore Aerial Dance, on September 16th, 2011 from 5:00pm - 10:00pm when they will host an Aerial Dinner Theater fundraiser at the 2640 space at historic St. Paul’s Church. The Dinner Theater will showcase local Aerialists and Aerial Dance professionals as well as student work.

Ticket sales and silent auction donations will be split between the Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America and Baltimore Aerial Dance’s equipment replacement.

The Maryland Science Center has donated four admission vouchers for the Yin-Yang Ball silent auction. The Maryland Science Center is located on Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Feeding the People Supports Food Day

Feeding the People has signed on to support Food Day, which will be October 24—in 2011 and in years to come. Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. We will work with people around the country to create thousands of events in homes, schools, churches, farmers markets, city halls, and state capitals.

Baltimore Ravens Support Yin-Yang Ball

The Baltimore Ravens All Community Team Foundation serves as a separate non-profit entity of the team's community outreach efforts. In addition to Ravens appearances and in-kind donations, the foundation provides support to Baltimore area non-profit organizations. Feeding the People Awarded Grant from Novo Nordisk

Feeding the People has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Novo Nordisk Inc., a world leader in diabetes care. The grant will help support Feeding the People’s Yin-Yang Ball, a fundraising event to empower low-income diabetics with meals, education, and support.

“We are very grateful for Novo Nordisk’s support, which will allow us serve additional clients. By providing low-income diabetics with nutritious meals, education, and ongoing support we can help prevent diabetes-related complications and save lives,” said Jennifer Schugam, President, Feeding the People.

Feeding the People’s Yin-Yang Ball will be held on September 24, 2011 from 7:00pm – 11:00pm at Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Maryland. Attendees will enjoy live music, dancing, Mexican food, hay rides, a silent auction, a piñata contest, and more. All proceeds will benefit Feeding the People.

Feeding the People Featured on bmore

Feeding the People founder Jennifer Schugam was featured in a recent bmore article about the University of Maryland's Social Work Community Outreach Services (SWCOS) ...

Jennifer Schugam, who had her placement in 2001-02, is founding executive director of Feeding the People, a grassroots organization providing home-delivered meals, nutrition education, and ongoing support for low-income diabetics in Baltimore. She says that "as a social worker providing in-home mental health services for the chronically mentally ill, I have personally witnessed the devastating effects of diabetes on low-income people. I believe that Feeding the People will save lives."

Schugam also serves as an outreach worker for Main Street Mobile Treatment Associates in Northwest Baltimore and credits the SWCOS experience for her career path.

"My work has grown out of my placement. I got hands-on experience that enabled me to see what the community looks and feels like."
